Launch a VIP program before Black Friday

Every Black Friday, you pay to acquire thousands of new customers. Then January hits and most of them are gone. That's not a traffic problem. It's a retention problem. And the fix starts before the sale, not after it.

A membership program gives holiday shoppers a reason to stick around. Launch it now and BFCM becomes the biggest signup event of your year, not just the biggest sales weekend.

Why BFCM is the best time to launch

Think about who shows up on Black Friday. New shoppers who've never bought from you. Lapsed customers you haven't seen in months. Loyal fans waiting for the deal. All of them are paying attention at the same time. That never happens again all year.

If you only hand them a discount, you get one order. If you hand them a membership, you get a relationship. You capture their info, give them a reason to return and set up the second purchase before the first one ships.

Early access beats a bigger discount

Here's the trap. Every brand is shouting about percent off. To stand out, you go deeper. Your margin shrinks and you train shoppers to wait for the next sale. Early access flips that. Instead of competing on price, you compete on status.

Open your BFCM deals to members 24 or 48 hours before everyone else. Now joining has real value. Shoppers sign up to get first pick. You get their info, a head start on sales and a customer who already feels like an insider.

It works especially well if you sell anything that sells out. Limited drops, popular sizes, gift sets. Nobody wants to miss the thing they came for.

Free or paid? Start with the outcome you want

There's no single right answer. It depends on what you need most this season.

Go free if you want to grow your list.

A free tier removes all friction. Shoppers join at checkout and instantly unlock perks. Think early access, a birthday reward or points on every order. You're trading a small perk for a customer you can market to all year.

Go paid if you want recurring revenue.

A paid tier works when your perks are worth real money. Free shipping all year. Members-only pricing. Exclusive products. Customers who pay to join are committed. They buy more often because they want their membership to pay off.

Or run both.

Start everyone free. Then give your best customers a clear reason to upgrade. The free tier fills the funnel. The paid tier grows your revenue.

What this looks like by industry

  • Supplements and wellness: Free members get early access to BFCM bundles. Paid members get free shipping and members-only pricing on every reorder. Your product runs out, so the perks keep them coming back.
  • Beauty and skincare: Members get first access to limited holiday gift sets before they sell out. Paid VIPs unlock a multiplier on points and free birthday gifts.
  • Coffee and specialty food: Paid members get free shipping and first dibs on seasonal roasts or limited batches. Small perk, but a big reason to stay.
  • Apparel: Early access matters most when sizes sell out. Members shop the drop first. Paid VIPs get monthly store credit, free returns and exclusive colorways.
  • Pet: Members earn points on every order of food and treats. Paid tier adds free shipping. Pet owners reorder constantly, so loyalty compounds fast.

Your launch checklist

  1. Pick your model. Free, paid or both. Decide on two or three perks that matter to your customers. Early access should be one of them.
  2. Set up your program. Build your members-only pricing and early access rules. Add the signup to your PDP and account pages.
  3. Start promoting. Email your list. Post on social. Tell shoppers exactly what they get and when early access opens.
  4. Open early access to members. Then open to everyone. Keep the membership offer visible on PDPs and Cart Drawer so new shoppers join on the way in.
  5. December and January are where it pays off. Welcome every new member. Remind them of their perks. Give them a reason to make that second purchase.

Don't let your best customers walk away

You worked hard to get those holiday shoppers. A membership program makes sure the work pays off long after the sale ends.
