Innovate or Die Days

Innovate or Die Days

At Bold, innovate or die is the motto by which we live. If we aren’t continually innovating, we aren’t moving forward as a company. Every now and then we need to remind ourselves of this. And that’s what Innovate or Die Days are all about. A few times a year, Builders team up, choose a project to work on, and develop it to at least a working demo within 48 hours. It serves to remind us of what we can do with any idea we come up with, and how we can get it done, if we really sit down and put our minds to it.

Since day one at Bold, breaks in regular productivity to innovate, or 'hack away' at something, has been part of our culture. In the early days we called it 'Fix it Wednesdays'. We would take a day every week, and just work on neat things we thought would make the company better. Even though it was just four of us in a basement, we knew it was important to have that break in our regular workflow to find time to innovate.

Today our company is a little bigger, but we still make this a priority and every time we hold the event, amazing projects come out of it!

Since going remote, we have held two virtual Innovate or Die Days with over 66 projects being worked on by Builders. Over the years, these events have evolved past just hackathons for our developers. From building internal tools to make our mentorship program better to creating better processes to work more efficiently, we now have Builders that work on a wide variety of projects that will help make Bold better.

We also take these days as an opportunity to support the communities we work in. As we couldn’t be together to keep the energy flowing, we decided to sell IOD Survival Packs filled with goodies to get our Builders through the two-day event. From Red Bull and Fireball to Skittles and socks, these packs had enough punch to keep everyone innovating. We donated all proceeds to charities both in Winnipeg and Austin including United Way, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, and motionball.

While we don’t know what our next Innovate or Die Days will look like, we know innovation is something we live and breathe every day! A big thank you to all our amazing staff who innovate every day, in every role, and across every department.
