Glossary of Shopify Membership & Loyalty Rewards Terms

    Memberships, Defined

Somewhere smack between the one-time sale and the lifelong customer sits the member. Members are shoppers who have agreed to a relationship, whether that means earning points, paying for a tier, or unlocking a not so secret door the rest of your storefront's visitors never see. Build that relationship well and recurring revenue opportunities compound. Build it badly and you have a rewards program nobody redeems and a members area nobody enters.

The vocabulary around all this can feel like three trades talking at once, because it is. That's why your Membership App and Loyalty Rewards App are usually different Apps. That's also why we wrote this glossary to translate loyalty rewards, memberships and access control into plain terms, so store owners deciding whether to reward, charge, or gate can tell the difference before committing.

    Program Structure06 terms
    B

    B2B Membership

Trade tier that gates wholesale pricing and product catalogues behind approved accounts. Retail prices stay public while wholesale rates and restricted lines appear only to admitted members, replacing spreadsheets of codes and manual pricing calls.

    F

    Free Membership

Zero-cost tier that generates no direct revenue and instead drives frequency, retention and lifetime value, building a warm base that converts to paid tiers far better than a cold audience does.

    M

    Membership Program

Structured retention relationship retailers offer shoppers in exchange for joining or paying. It grants perks, points, discounts or access, and can run free, paid, or as a mix of tiers.

    M

    Membership Tiers

Levels within a program, where higher tiers unlock more and rules layer so premium members see and do more than base members on the same storefront.

    P

    Paid Membership

Recurring paid tier a shopper commits to, turning loyalty into predictable high-margin revenue. Once a customer has paid to join, walking away feels like giving something up, which is why paid members stay longer.

    S

    Subscription Add-On Membership

Membership layer that sits on top of an existing subscription, reading subscriber tags and unlocking perks automatically with no second sign-up, which gives subscribers more reasons to stay and lowers churn.

    Enrollment03 terms
    M

    Membership Registration Form

Signup form shoppers complete when joining a plan, extended with custom fields the merchant defines as free text or dropdown choices, each set as required or optional. Sometimes searched as a membership application form, it hands store owners segmentation data from the first day of the relationship without a separate survey tool.

    O

    Open Enrollment

Lowest-friction way to join, where any customer becomes a member automatically on account creation, first purchase or a click, growing a base fast.

    R

    Rule-Based Enrollment

Enrollment triggered when a shopper meets criteria a merchant sets, such as spend, order count, product or tag, so membership feels earned and members churn less.

    Loyalty & Rewards12 terms
    A

    Automated Store Credit

Credit dropped to members on a schedule and applied automatically at checkout, manufacturing a reason to return and converting strongly on paid tiers.

    B

    Bonus Points

Extra points awarded for actions beyond a purchase, such as joining the program, celebrating a birthday, leaving a product review or following the store on social media, plus limited-time campaigns like double points. They reward engagement between orders and give new members a balance to spend from their first day.

    C

    Cashback Rewards

Store credit earned as a percentage of what a shopper spends, reading in plain currency so members always know what a reward is worth.

    E

    Early Access

First entry to new products or drops before the public, often worth more than a discount in apparel and beauty where being first signals status.

    E

    Experiential Rewards

Rewards that give members an experience instead of money off, such as early access to a drop, an invitation to a presale, or a members area full of guides and recipes. They usually cost less than a discount to deliver, protect margin, and build the kind of attachment a price cut rarely earns.

    F

    Free Shipping Perk

Shipping offered at no cost to members and applied automatically at checkout, the single biggest driver of membership sign-ups across most categories.

    L

    Loyalty & Rewards Program

Program that rewards repeat purchases with points, store credit, discounts or perks to lift retention rather than chase new customers. It is the umbrella the whole membership program sits inside.

    L

    Loyalty Points

Store currency issued for purchases or actions and redeemed, usually as store credit. Points reward past behavior in a format shoppers already understand but can forget without a nudge.

    L

    Loyalty Rewards

Benefits members earn for buying and engaging, from points and store credit to free shipping and early access, applied automatically at checkout without redemption friction.

    M

    Member Discounts

Percentage or fixed reductions available only to members by product, collection or tier, effective but capable of eroding margin if used as a permanent price cut.

    R

    Reward Redemption

The moment a member converts earned points or store credit into value at checkout, online or at the Shopify POS register. Lower redemption friction lifts repeat purchase.

    V

    VIP Tiers

Status levels inside a tiered loyalty program that members climb by spending more or ordering more often, with each tier multiplying how fast points accrue. Membership tiers are chosen or paid for, while VIP status is earned through behavior, which turns your best customers into your most rewarded ones.

    Access Control09 terms
    D

    Drip Content

Member content released on a schedule rather than all at once, giving members a recurring reason to return instead of a single one-time unlock.

    G

    Gated Checkout

Blocking non-members from completing a purchase on restricted products by tier, the firmest gate and most effective for exclusive or trade-only lines.

    G

    Gated Content

Blogs, articles, videos and resources reserved for members, especially powerful in health, wellness, pet and food where shoppers want expertise as much as product.

    G

    Gated Purchasing

Hiding the add-to-cart button on selected products from everyone but signed-in members, who see it return the moment they log in. Non-members still see the product, photos and price alongside a prompt to join, which places this gate between hiding products outright and blocking checkout.

    H

    Hidden Pricing

Prices shown only to members who have signed in or qualified, set site-wide, by collection, by product or by tier, a staple of B2B and trade programs.

    M

    Member-Only Products & Collections

Individual products or entire collections shown only to qualifying members and hidden from everyone else, turning a catalogue into a catalogue within a catalogue.

    M

    Members Area

Section of a storefront built from ordinary Shopify pages that only members can open, while non-members see an invitation to join in place of the content. It usually holds a members home page, premium guides, presale details or event information, with no custom theme work required.

    P

    Password-Protected Page

Shopify's native password setting, which locks the entire storefront behind one shared password rather than protecting individual pages. Guarding a single page takes custom Liquid code or an app, and a shared password can't tell one visitor from another, which is why membership programs gate by signed-in customer instead.

    S

    SKU-Level Member Pricing

Member pricing set product by product and variant by variant through the Bold Custom Pricing integration, protecting margin on best sellers and restricted items.

    Omnichannel & Automation06 terms
    M

    Membership Portal

Self-service space inside Shopify customer accounts where members pause, cancel or review their membership without contacting support. Offering a pause alongside cancellation keeps the door open for lapsing members, and every change handled there is one fewer ticket for your team.

    M

    Milestone Rewards

Perks triggered automatically by a date or customer event such as a birthday or anniversary, timing the purchase occasion to when a shopper is most likely to buy.

    O

    Omnichannel Loyalty

Loyalty that works the same online and in physical retail through native Shopify POS, applying member pricing and credit at the register exactly as on the site.

    S

    Shopify Flows Automation

Native Shopify automation that runs member journeys without code, from welcome emails and tier upgrades to credit drops, win-backs and anniversary rewards.

    U

    Universal Tagging

Reading member tags set by any other app in the stack, which lets a membership app act as the hub of the loyalty ecosystem rather than another silo.

    W

    Wallet Pass & Lock-Screen Push

Digital membership card in Apple or Google Wallet paired with push notifications sent to the phone, bypassing the crowded inbox and reading as a purchase occasion.

    Retention Economics06 terms
    F

    Free Trial

No-cost period on a paid membership, usually 14 or 30 days, that lets a shopper feel the perks before paying and lifts conversion over asking up front.

    L

    Loyalty Program Breakage

Share of issued points or store credit that members never redeem, whether it expires or simply sits forgotten in an account. Some breakage keeps a program affordable, but high breakage usually signals rewards that feel out of reach, and unredeemed balances generally sit on the books as a liability until they lapse.

    L

    Loyalty Program ROI

Return a loyalty program generates against its full cost, counting redeemed rewards, app fees and margin given away. Measured honestly, it compares member spend with a matched group of non-members rather than crediting the program for purchases loyal shoppers were always going to make.

    M

    Member Lifetime Value (MLV)

Total value a member brings across the relationship, counting fees, repeat purchases and referrals, usually far cheaper to raise than acquiring new shoppers.

    M

    Membership Churn

Rate at which members leave a program over a period, the number every membership business watches because it decides whether a program compounds or bleeds.

    T

    The Endowment Effect

Behavioral principle that once shoppers earn something, walking away feels like losing rather than missing out, the psychology that makes a good program sticky.

    Now build the program.
